What you’ll need

You only need three ingredients to whip up this fun Easter treat for the kids – plus water and ice.

Ingredients to make bunny shaped jello jigglers.

Bunny jello ingredients

  • One small box of jello, any flavor!
  • Unflavored gelatin (Knox or beef gelatin), 1 envelope
  • Boiling water, 1 cup
  • Ice water, 1/2 cup
  • Plain Greek or vanilla yogurt, 1/2 cup

Optional ingredient: Cocoa powder, just 1/2 teaspoon to decorate the bunnies.

For these Easter jello jigglers I prefer full-fat Greek style yogurt for a creamier taste, but any yogurt will do.

The yogurt is added to make the jello pastel colored for Easter. You can substitute different dairy like sour cream, heavy cream or evaporated milk (delicious with jello!) for a similar effect. Don’t use condensed milk here, it will be too sweet.

For the jello flavors: In the photos, I used lemon and grape. I love how the lemon jello bunnies look exactly like they were made of white chocolate!

You can certainly choose your favorite – I will give you plenty of jello flavor and color ideas that are prefect for spring below.

Silicone mold

You’ll need a silicone 3D bunny mold to shape this jello Easter dessert.

The whole recipe makes 1 cup of liquid. Depending on the size of your mold, you may need to repeat the process until all the bunnies are shaped.

My mold fits half cup. After filling the first 6 bunnies and chilling them, I kept the remaining liquid jello at room temperature.

Once the initial batch was set, I used the remaining jello to make the rest of the bunnies. If the jello thickens too much while waiting, simply microwave it for a few seconds to remelt.

How to make

Prepare the bunny mold with vegetable oil or cooking spray. If spraying, also rub with your fingertip to cover all of the jello mold nooks and crannies. Pay special attention to the ear holes to make sure they won’t stick. Let’s get jiggly!

Pour boiling water over dry mixed gelatin and jello powders.

1. Combine the dry gelatin and jello powders in a heat-resistant bowl.

Pour in 1 cup of boiling water and mix for 2 minutes until the gelatin crystals are completely dissolved.

Mixing jello with ice water.

2. Fill a 1/2 cup measure with ice cubes and add enough cold water to complete.

Mix the ice water into the dissolved jello until the ice is fully melted.

Whisk jello and yogurt.

3. Add 1/2 cup of plain or vanilla flavor yogurt and whisk very well until the mixture is smooth.

Pour jello into oiled bunny mold.

4.Place the mold on a tray or dish to keep it steady. Gently pour the creamy jello into each bunny cavity.

Place the filled mold in the refrigerator and allow it to chill for at least one hour or until the jello sets firmly before unmolding.

Although I was really careful oiling the mold and removing the bunnies, I got one broken ear. If that happens to you, don’t worry. Simply remove the broken ear tip stuck in the mold and gently press it back onto the bunny to glue it back together.

If you’d like to decorate the bunnies, I suggest painting them with cocoa powder. Dip your dry fingertip in cocoa powder and gently dab it onto each jello bunny ears and butt for extra cuteness!

Jello in pastel colors

The soft, light hues of pastel colors in Easter eggs, candies, and decorations evoke a sense of freshness, renewal, and the blooming flowers of spring time.

So, which pretty pastel color do you want for your jello bunnies? You can choose your favorite color or jello flavor, or make batches of different colored Easter treats!

Don’t use strawberry, cherry, or raspberry flavors if you want to create pink pastels. The intense red color of these flavors won’t lighten enough to look pastel pink; it’ll just look like a watered-down red.

All the flavored gelatin powders listed below will become light pastel colored when mixed with yogurt:

  • Green: Jello-O Lime, Sonic Green Apple, Starburst Watermelon
  • Light Pink: Starburst All Pink Strawberry, Jell-O Watermelon
  • Blue: Jell-O Berry Blue, Sonic Ocean Water, Jolly Rancher Blue Raspberry
  • Yellow: Jell-O Lemon, Jell-O Island Pineapple
  • Purple: Jell-O Grape, Skittles Wild Berry, Welch’s Concord Grape

Recipe variations

Sugar-free, low-carb

Use sugar-free jello powder and plain yogurt without sugar added.

Low-fat, low-calorie

Pick a sugar-free jello flavor and low-fat and sugar-free yogurt.

gelatin-free (vegetarian)

Substitute the unflavored gelatin for a plant based jelling agents like agar powder which is gelatin-free.

For the jello powder, you can use vegetarian and kosher flavored jel dessert powder mixes of different flavors.

The amounts needed and method or order of mixing with cold / hot water are different for plant-based jel than it is for gelatin, so ignore the recipe steps and adapt according to the instructions of the package.

dairy-free, lactose-free

You can use plain or vanilla flavored coconut yogurt instead of cow’s milk yogurt.

Making ahead and storage

You can prepare the Easter rabbit jellies ahead of time. They keep well in the refrigerator for up to one week.

For maximum freshness, store the jello bunnies in an airtight container to prevent them from drying out or absorbing odors and flavors from other items in your fridge.
